A New Home for Family Tree Maker Users

When The Master Genealogist (TMG) announced it was closing its doors, I decided to make the switch to RootsMagic. The transition was surprisingly painless.
Now that Ancestry.com has announced the retirement of its Family Tree Maker (FTM) genealogy software, RootsMagic is offering a special for FTM users:

Family Tree Maker users can make the switch to RootsMagic and enjoy its amazing features such as: Color coding, Problem AlertsShareable CD’srunning straight off of a flash drive, FamilySearch integrationDataClean, multi-provider WebHints, Mac and Windows versions with a single license, and more!
To make the transition as painless as possible, they’ve set-up a special website at www.FTMUpgrade.com that includes training videos, testimonials, and more.  And for a limited time, they are offering Family Tree Maker users the full-version of RootsMagic for the amazing low price of only $20. We will also include the printed book, “Getting the Most out of RootsMagic” absolutely free (a $14.95 value).  You must visit www.FTMUpgrade.com to receive the discount.

Occupation: Stevedore

A stevedore is a skilled dock worker specializing in the task of loading and unloading a ship; placing cargo carefully in the hold to ensure the ship will remain stable at sea and not list or capsize due to an imbalance in the hold while keeping it in the proper order to accommodate unloading at different ports. The process of loading and unloading could involve rigging and tackle to hoist cargo into the hold and the building and placement of planks and gangways.

Most Interesting Land Record Find

This 1780 Henry County, Virginia, land record for 5th G-Grandfather Reuben Nance has two fun facts:
First, it was issued by Thomas Jefferson, then Governor of Virginia;
and second, it is dated 4th of July.

It was especially nice that it is recorded in the deed book on one single page.

Ruth Freeman Welcheck of Ohio - Problem Solved.

I was searching for Ruth (Freeman) Welcheck, the spouse of John J Welcheck.  I last saw the couple in the 1920 census.  Then nothing more on Ruth  (John dies Feb 1930 and their son is residing with the Welcheck grandparents in 1930 census).
Then, finally, I locate a short legal notice in a 1931 newspaper referencing Ruth Tishel formerly Welcheck, and with that clue I was able to find the following:

Memorials commemorating the 1634 arrival of
Zacharie & Xainte (Dupont) Cloutier
to New France (now Quebec).

Our 10th G-grandparent, they are one of the founding families of Beauport.  It was determined that by 1800, Zacharie Cloutier had 10,850 French-Canadian descendants, the most of any Quebec colonist, according to the marriage records studied by the Historical Demography Research Program at the Universite de Montreal.

Wedding Wednesday: Leah Warburton to Isaac Moore - Trowbridge, Wiltshire

Below is the 1823 marriage announcement for Leah Warburton (b. 1804) daughter of John & Lydia (Sandiford) Warburton, to Isaac Moore.  They were married on 26 March 1823.  It is interesting that the newspaper has her name as Mary Ann, but all other records I have found for her are consistent with the name 'Leah'. The date, names of the spouse and her father, a well known Baptist minister, are correct, so I am confident this announcement is for Leah.
